Scratching On Things I Could Disavow is a series
of photographs of a collection of ammunition that was fired
during the Lebanese civil war. The pictured bullets, missile
shells, and shrapnel pieces were gathered by the artist from
different sources. The collection is presented here with snippets
of information that give some insight into the stories that
[possibly] surround it.
Born in Lebanon in 1967, Walid Raad is a multimedia artist
and a Professor of Art at The Cooper Union School of Art (New
York, USA). Raad's productions to date include mixed media
installations, performances, videos, inkjet prints, and literary
essays. His artworks have been shown at Documenta 11 (Kassel,
Germany), The Venice Biennale (Venice, Italy), The Whitney
Biennial (New York, USA), and Homeworks (Beirut, Lebanon).
Walid Raad grapples with the representation of traumatic historical
events of collective dimensions and the ways film, video,
and photography function as documents of physical and psychological
violence.
