Amman - Darat Al Funun is currently organizing a joint art exhibition by Marwan Qassab of Syria and Angelika von Schwedes of German as part of its fall season.

The exhibition features portraits by Qassab, born in 1934 in Damascus who studied fine arts in Berlin. Qassab is one of the most important Arab artists working today, and enjoys great fame in Europe. He is considered one of the leading visual artists of Germany, and many of his works can be found in European museum

Qassab has held numerous solo exhibitions throughout the world, among them at Paris' Bibliotheque Nationale and the Institute du Monde Arab. Qassab shows through his paintings the pain of human soul and its aspirations, and has 23 paintings at Darat Al Funun.

The human being in a state of excitement and grief at the same time is among his hallmarks. The faces he portrays are always ideal, unique and anonymous all at once.

"Through the colors and faces, I speak my senses and express my vision of things, the state of my heart," said the artist. He uses different angles and colorful symbols to attract observers from the first glimpse, and believes art is an "attempt to question the visual process.

" According to him, the artist lends his dream to the viewer with every work he presents, "but when standing in front of a painting one sees his own dream."

Schwedes was born in 1950 in Berlin, where she studied art. She is spellbound by the magic of Petra, and her 46 paintings bring viewers closer to the magic and charm of Jordan's landscape.

Schwedes says that "piercing art with inner feelings is a process that requires total concentration and truthfulness by the artist to produce the best product.

She added that men usually look at things from a very shallow angle. "Man only strives to understand what is obviously visible.

Two abstract paintings called "Eve" show rich red, green and blue brushstrokes colors of nature, colors of nature, as she calls them- covering most of the white canvas while leaving patches of it. Nature, according to Schwedes, "is the womb where we come from and end."
