Man with a tattoo

2007 | Photographic series- C-Type Prints, 75 x 105 (cm)
By Oraib Toukan

Nothing particular is known about the subject of this series or can be seen of him except for the intricate tattoo that spreads over his upper back. The tattoo is a tangle of forms, including a dagger, an eagle’s wings, and a map and flag of Palestine.

Man with a tattoo was first envisioned as an exploration of patriotic tattoos of a people in exile. After facing much difficulty in shooting the subject matter, the piece turned into a photo installation of a single image.

The series as well as the process of its production are symbolic, shedding light on the simultaneous pride and shame associated with patriotism, identity, and a fading memory.
