Darat Al Funun a "Home of the Arts" aims at providing the atmosphere for creativity, dialogue and knowledge through acting as host to the various artists working on the premises, and also through upholding the spirit of continuity of experiences transferred from one generation to the other.

In recognition of the importance the role played by the master in transmitting his/her knowledge and experience to new generations,

the Summer Academy of Darat Al Funun has been established in 1999 on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Shoman foundations' support program for the arts. The Academy is under the supervision of the Syrian artist Marwan Kassab Bashi who is a member of the Academie de Kunste and a professor of drawing at the Berlin Superior College of Fine Arts.
