The site of the Byzantine
church, is a very special site, a place where, it seems, there
was a continuity in cult spanning millennia-one cult taking
the place of another, each embodying some of the features
of the earlier one. The Christian church, perhaps dedicated
to St. George and perhaps on or near the site of a shrine
dedicated to Herakles, in turn, became a memorial of al-Khader. place

urban
setting surrounding the Darat, the old downtown
city of Amman
The
traditional Amman residences which now house Darat al Funun
were built in the 1920s at a time of urban expansion initiated
by the leading families of Amman, Salt and other towns in
Jordan, Palestine and Syria. Located on a quiet hilltop, they
overlooked the small Circassian village that occupied Amman's
central valley. Today, they are in one of the oldest residential
districts of the city, within easy reach of the downtown area.
